The Cank Street Gallery Summer Open Art Exhibition 2018

The walls are amass with colour as creativity dazzled around every corner of the Cank Street Gallery at Thursday's Private View.  Hundreds gathered and drank the bar dry by 7.15pm as we arrived!  Tim, Anetha & myself captured a glimpse of the atmosphere on such a fabulous evening.

'Tall Limes' for sale at the Cank Street Gallery

Tall Limes by Lizzy Hewitt

Thrilled that my picture is for sale at the Cank Street Gallery together with an article published on the Friends of Victoria Park website and Facebook page and the Leicester Clarendon Park Community Online Community Facebook page!  Excited and slightly anxious at the prospect as I’m not a writer, I put on my best writing head and got some words together! Biggest thanks to their Chair, Doug Smith for publishing it for me. Hope you like it!  Here’s the link:

I think the biggest thing I learnt from oil painting classes was not necessarily getting the technique right but opening up my mind as an artist to be more expressive and explore new subject matter.  Taking a fine art approach and painting things I feel strongly about, issues such as mental health and evoking feelings and emotions is somewhere I’d like to go with future work.

The fundamentals of oil using expressive brush marks and applying thicker paint, I feel has made my watercolour work better and contributed to the success of ‘Tall Limes’.

A great year for the sale of Lizzy's paintings!

It's been a great year for me at Cank Street Gallery! The sale of three major paintings has been a real achievement! I'm grateful to everyone who's been involved in exhibiting and selling my work; more next year, I promise!
Cank Street is a lovely place to exhibit - the staff are welcoming and helpful to artists and public alike. Owner, Dayle, continues to put her efforts into encouraging local artists, holding shows & exhibitions and inviting those interested along to artist's talks. This year it's been especially nice to meet up regularly with others and to become a consistent part of the art crowd.
I'm indebted to all the collectors of my work and to everyone who continues to support me. You know who you are. Thank you all so much!

Sue Graham chats at Leicester's Cank Street Gallery

Sue Graham with her paintings at Leicester's Cank Street Gallery, 22 September 2016

Artist talks are useful and occasionally highly informative events so I was particularly glad to be invited along to a presentation by acclaimed LSA (Leicester Society of Artists) featured artist, Sue Graham.

At Leicester's Cank Street Gallery on 22 September, I discovered that Sue aims to capture light, time and place in her pictures, using Britain's coastline from Norfolk to Cornwall, and in all weather conditions.

Thornham in the Mist by Sue Graham,
oil on paper
Sue paints in oils, an ideal medium to convey mood and demonstrate changes in light. I particularly appreciated her use of the texturing palette knife, and some of her more dramatically dark and moody pictures, which work well, even on a small scale.

To obtain the atmosphere she seeks, Sue sets off very early in the morning to complete at least one picture in a day. Often she uses board instead of canvas, which she says is good for quick work. Sometimes she soaks up the atmosphere before heading to a beach to set up. Once a painting takes off she will stay long into the evening to take advantage of the light and her creative mood.

It was a real pleasure to meet Sue. Check out her recent artworks at sue-graham.co.uk

Photos from the 23 June CANK STREET GALLERY Prize Giving Party!

Wearing the most sequined dress I could find (and leaving the shiny things all over the gallery floor!) the Cank Street Gallery Prize Giving evening on 23 June was a FABULOUS success. OK it was a couple of weeks ago now but better late than never!
Here are my pics (thanks to Mark for taking photo instruction so well!) and THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO CAME ALONG! Thank you all for your support, now and always!

Successful Special View at Leicester's Cank Street Gallery

What a fantastic evening we had at Cank Street Gallery on 15th of this month! The special view of the gallery's Open Exhibition for 2015 was wonderful and very different, with a wide variety of artworks by artists, sculptors & craftspeople from the Leicestershire area.

The range of work was genuinely fascinating, from tiny sculptures to large scale multi-media installations, still life, portraits, landscapes and abstracts available to purchase.

The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by the many people who attended, the friends, family & admirers of exhibitors, art buyers, local curators and the occasional celebrity.

Dayle Flude, the Gallery owner, was delighted with the turnout and with the friendly, positive atmosphere, which continued all evening. It was one of those parties where everyone was happy to be in attendance :)

Leicester's Cank Street Gallery's Open Exhibition remains open until the end of October.
